ANSI/TIA-568.1-E: Commercial Building Telecommunications Cabling

by

ANSI/TIA-568.1-E “Commercial Building Telecommunications Cabling” was developed by the TIA TR‑42.1 Premises Telecommunications Infrastructure Subcommittee and published in March, 2020.

Scope: This Standard contains requirements that facilitate the planning and installation of a structured cabling system in a commercial building environment. The structure for commercial building cabling is based on the generic cabling system structure specified in TIA‑568.0‑E. Performance and technical criteria for balanced twisted-pair cabling systems are specified in TIA‑568.2‑D. Performance and technical criteria for optical fiber cabling systems are specified in TIA‑568.3‑E.

ANSI/TIA-568.1-E-1 “Addendum 1, Balanced Single Twisted‑pair Cabling; Cabling Requirements for Wireless Access Points” published in March, 2023 and modifies TIA‑568.1‑E to add single twisted‑pair cabling, as specified in TIA‑568.5, as a recognized media type and update the minimum requirements for cabling to wireless access points. When balanced twisted‑pair cabling is used, a minimum of two category 6A or higher cabling runs shall be installed to each wireless access point. Additional horizontal links are recommended.

Significant changes from the previous edition include:

  • Cabling Subsystem 1 cabling to TIA-862-C coverage areas added and distinguished from cabling to work areas
  • Distinction made between consolidation points and connectors contained within consolidation points
  • Distinction made between horizontal connection points and connectors contained within horizontal connection points
  • New clause on environmental compatibility added
  • Clause 5 (Telecommunications Cabling Infrastructure) reorganized to better align with TIA‑568.0‑E
  • References updated to conform with the 2019 edition of the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) Standards Style Guide for Engineering Committees
  • New clause on physical network security added
  • Content of TIA‑568.1‑D‑1 (updated references, new media types) incorporated
