ANSI/TIA-570-D: Residential Telecommunications Infrastructure Standard

by

ANSI/TIA‑570-D “Residential Telecommunications Infrastructure Standard” was developed by the TIA TR‑42.2 Residential Infrastructure Subcommittee and published in July, 2018.

Scope: This Standard provides specifications for telecommunications premises cabling systems and related pathways and spaces requirements for single- and multi‑dwelling (e.g., campus) residential buildings. These specifications apply to both the telecommunications cabling within and between residential dwelling units. This Standard specifies three grades of cabling based upon the services that are expected to be supported within each residence.

Significant changes from the previous edition include:

  • Cabling system Grade 3 added
  • The term “telecommunications outlet/connector” has been replaced with “equipment outlet”
  • Category 6A recognized as the minimum category of balanced twisted‑pair cabling
  • The use of consolidation points in balanced twisted‑pair and optical fiber channels and links are recognized
  • The number of coaxial cables and associated connectors required at each location in a Grade 2 cabling system has been reduced from 2 to 1
  • The electrical power service to the distribution device (DD) has been increased from 15 A to 20 A
  • The 100 m (328 ft) length restriction for optical fiber cabling has been removed
  • Series 59 coaxial cabling is no longer a recognized media type for any Grade cabling system
  • Multi-conductor copper cable is no longer a recognized media type for multi‑dwelling backbone cabling

ANSI/TIA-570-D Content:

  • Regulatory
  • Topology
  • Single-Dwelling Residence Infrastructure
  • Multi-Dwelling/Campus Infrastructure
  • Cable and Connecting Hardware
  • Installation Requirements
  • Field Test Requirements
  • Administration
  • Cabling for Wireless Access Points
  • Annexes addressing Planning, Design, and Construction Guidelines and Project Planning

ANSI/TIA-570-D Residential Cabling Grades:

The grading system can assist in the selection and provision of cabling media for residential applications.

Grade 1 provides a generic cabling system that meets the minimum requirements for basic telecommunications services such as telephone, satellite, community antenna television (CATV), and data services. Recognized media for Grade 1 systems includes balanced twisted‑pair and coaxial cabling. A minimum of one 4‑pair category 6A or higher rated balanced twisted‑pair channel and one 75‑ohm coaxial channel shall be available at each equipment outlet and the distribution device (DD). Optionally, 2‑fiber (minimum) optical fiber cabling may be deployed in addition to the balanced twisted‑pair and broadband coaxial cabling.

Grade 2 provides a generic cabling system that meets the minimum requirements for basic and advanced telecommunications services to include the technologies referenced for Grade 1 plus high‑speed internet, wireless access points, and in‑home generated video. Recognized media for Grade 2 systems includes balanced twisted‑pair and coaxial cabling. A minimum of two category 6A or higher rated balanced twisted‑pair channels and one 75‑ohm coaxial channel shall be available at each equipment outlet and the distribution device (DD). Optionally, 2‑fiber (minimum) optical fiber cabling may be deployed in addition to the balanced twisted‑pair and broadband coaxial cabling.

Grade 3 provides a generic cabling system that meets the minimum requirements for basic and advanced telecommunications services to include the technologies referenced for Grade 2 plus consideration for applications operating over optical fiber cabling. Recognized media for Grade 3 systems includes balanced twisted‑pair, coaxial, and optical fiber cabling. A minimum of of two category 6A or higher rated balanced twisted‑pair channels, one 75‑ohm coaxial channel, and one 2‑fiber (minimum) optical fiber cable shall be available at each equipment outlet and the distribution device (DD).
